Great Makeup Starts with Great Skin ( Part1)

You know what they say ” Great Makeup Starts with Great Skin”.  No matter how much makeup we apply on the face, the end result will never be the same unless your skin is absolutely amazing. Its like building a ” house”, the foundation of it has to be perfect or it will fall apart.  If there is one thing you should invest in it should be skincare. There are alot of skin care companies in the market (drug store, department, cosmetic grade, surgical grade).  You want to make sure your skin care line is enriched with active ingredients and not fillers for it to do its job.  One line which I LOVE is ” ZO Skin Health by Zein Obagi“, it is amazing and your skin will thank you for it. You would need to buy it from a Medi Spa that is designated to sell the producs.  One medi spa in particular is Avente Laser and Aesthetics.

Avanete laser and Aesthetics is based in Burnaby ( Highgate area), Voted # 1 place in Burnaby in 2014 and definitely  my ” GO-TO ” place for something out of downtown. They pride in their customer services skills, are passionate abot the industry and you always leave feeling refreshed and educated about what products and services.  Sandi is my Gal!

My Top 3 Products that I recommend for Brides and anyone in general are the Oclipse Sunscreen and Primer, Offects Exfoliating Polish and the Ommerse Overnght Recovery Creme

Oclipse Sunscreen and Primer with SPF30- This product is by far my favourite Sunscreen on the market. Not only is it not greasy or oily. It does not leave a ” white cast” on your face as the colour is a skin/nude colour.  A little bit goes a long time and your will is soo smooth afterwards =). Apply it under your makeup as a sunscreen and primer to have a more smoother and even surface for your foundation.

Offects Exfoliation Polish- Gone are the days of dry skin.  Using my regular cleanser with this exfoliator my skin feels so smooth after I wash my face. The blue crystals are ultra fine and exfoliates your dead skin cells.  You need so little with it, massage in a circular motion, rinse and of course feel how smooth your skin is afterwards. I also love how it is enriched with Vitamins A, C and E  as antioxidants for your skin =)

Ommerse Overnight Recovery Creme- Your skin does most of the “recovering” during rest time. A long day of enviromental radicals causes stress to our skin.  When you go to bed you need to feed your skin and nurish it back to health.  This night creme has calming agents that prevent irritation and retinol etc that work on your skin overnight to repair and regenerate your skin sells to help reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Its like skin food during the night 😉

Stay tuned for my adventures back to Avante in July when I tried out their signature service the Hydrafacial which is a must do for Brides 😉

Throwback Thursday Wedding =)

RayMaggie-118

We are happy to say its been 2 years since Maggie and Ray tied the knot. Back in 2013 Maggie had hired me as her Personal Stylist for the Day =). It was amazing, we started the day off bright at early at 4:30am with hair and makeup for the tea ceremony. Followed that was portrait pictures of her groom and family taken by Nhi Le.  During the day there was 2 changes of hair and makeup and we couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out.  We recently caught up with Maggie and they now have a beautiful son =).  Wow time flies.  It seems like yesterday that we glammed everyone up for the big day!.

10 Min Smokey Eyes =)

As a makeup artist I always get asked by clients and friends  “How do I do a smokey eye without looking like a panda?”.  The key to a smokey eye is blending and also have the ” darkest” colour near your lash line and blending upwards creating the ” smoke effect”. One of the fastest ways of creative a “smokey eye” is only using 3 products!.  Black eyeliner, a shadows of your choosing ( this will determine your smoke) and mascara.

1) Line your eyes with the black eye liner ( top and bottom), I like to use a waterproof one like Makeup Forever Aqua Eyes to really have it stay there all day

2)Using your brush or your fingers “smudge it” upwards ( this does NOT have to be perfect), just make sure you see no harsh lines and the darkest part is still at the lash line.

3)Apply your smoke colour with a ” blending ” brush, be sure have the gradient from lash line to crease. – Don’t forget about the bottom ( focusing more on inner 2/3 of eye)

4) Apply Mascara and ta da! You are done.

Here are a few other ways of applying a smokey eye.~ Which one is your fave?

My TOP 5 Favourite Makeup Products!

Port10-

Clients all the time ask me ” What is your favourite makeup brand” and to be honest I don’t have a “Favourite” per say.  Every product brand  has someone unique and different that I like about them.  I don’t necessary like EVERYTHING in a line but I have my “Top Must Have Products” that work well with my line of work.  Being a professional full time artist I rely most  on quality and durability.  There are times when I will pay the extra $20 for a foundation because it works ! ( You know what they say, you get what your pay for).  Expensive products doesn’t mean they are the ” best” either, sometimes you are paying for marketing, a celebrity endorsing it or “luxury” packaging so don’t be fooled! ;).  Here are my TOP 5 Makeup  Products  that I absolutely LOVE

1-Loreal- Yup Loreal you read right!, Its Drugstore brand but its okay =)  I go through mascara every few weeks from brides, grads to personal clients. Loreal mascaras have always been a staple in my kit.  They are not ” too wet” nor ” too dry”.  For me they are the perfect consistency  for what I need them to do.  Loreal Voluminous has one of the Blackest Blacks out there and it really enhances the lashes

2- Face Atelier Ultra Foundation Pro- Canadian based company (thumbs up) that delivers a exellent foundation which is building, light weight and lasts.  I have used so many foundation out there from drug store, high end to luxury and I have finally found my go to foundation!. Its so soft and weightless and does so much with just a little bit of product.  the 0++ is a must in my kit too as it is a adjuster for those who want a different ” tone”

3-YSL Rouge Volupte- These are my favourite lipsticks hands down. They are super pigmented, soft and very moisurizing. A swipe definitely goes a long way.  They come in a full range of shades and I am sure you can find one that will fit you. From soft beiges to reds and deep plums, these lipsticks are a must have in my kit.

4-Viseart Eyeshadows- I got introduced to these a few months back when I was taking a Colour Theory Course in Seattle. After touching them and playing with these eyeshadows my life was changed imediately. Not only do these shadows blends like a dream, they also have no fall out at all.  You can create the ultimate smokey eye without having to go back and fix up under the eye.  I love how they come in all sorts of colours ( Perfect for a compact kit)

5-Makep Forever HD Creme Blush-  Makeup Forever created the HD Foundation with HD Powder a few years back and they were a game changer.  As mediums have now changed to HD we ( makeup artists and consumers) require HD compliant products.  These creme blushes are amazing!, they create the most gorgeous colours when applied on the face ( kind of like that air brush finish look). They are easy to blend and the colour range works on all skin tones.

3 Must Have Summer Essentials

Summer is here (well almost) and you know what that means, hot days, drinks on the patio, runny mascara, and shiny faces =P.  As we leave Winter we should change up our makeup bag with more  Spring and Summer beauty products.  That means we can put away the vampy lipstick and the powder compacts. Here are my top 3 Must Have products for Summer

1) Evian Water- I love this as its feels so refreshing on your face ( definitely cools you off a bit) and revives any dull makeup on your face =).  What I also love about this is that it comes in a travel size as well. ( Perfect for beach days).  Spritz on your face and watch the magic (TA DA!!) happen. From Boring/Dull to Natural Luminous Skin

evian

2)Blotting Papers- If you are like me, I “glow” like crazy during these months. Sometimes I glow too much and I swear people could see their reflection on my forehead.  Blotting papers are a great alternative to powders as they remove exess oil without adding on any sort of makeup on your face ( more makeup= more chance of it looking cakey).  Blotting papers can be found just about anywhere

3)Lipstains- These are a must! The give your lip a “just bitten” look without looking too done up.  Apply it in the morning and you will barely have to touch up through out the day.  It gives you lips a fresh, natural look that is perfect for those summer nights.  TIP:Some stains can be used on your lips and your cheeks, Great way to keep your makeup bag compact!

Featured Wedding of May: Love Boat Fairy Tale

Alicia3

If you have ever heard of the LOVE BOAT then you would know it was actually one of Princess Cruises original cruise ships back in the day. This is where we begin.  I had the pleasure of styling Alicia on her wedding date with her now husband Chris.  They met working on Sapphire Princess a few years back and last month they tied the knot.  As we got to know Alicia we also discovered we had worked on the same ship in 2009 on board the Caribbean Princess ( such a small world).  On Alicias Wedding date, it was a fairy tale made for them.  Their venue was at Steamworks in Gastown which showed off Canada Place ( Vancouvers ship port) and a meet and greet at the “Gassy Jack” whom had discovered Gastown and was from the  Hull which was were Alicia and Chris had lived in the UK. Everything at the wedding was about their journey traveling around the world together while working on cruise ships from different themes at each tables to the “guestbook” which were actually post cards. Everything was perfect and couldn’t be better. As we ( Cathy Lee on Hair)  prepped Alicia and her family for the big day we had the wonderful Sher More Photography take a few behind the scenes for us :) Thank you for having us Alicia and Chris, we wish you both  a lifetime full of happiness and joy =)AliciaAlicia2

IIKON LASHES

I had recently gotten to try IIKONN LASHES and I love them!. There are so many 3D lash companies out there and its hard to choose which ones carry the best lashes. I love that IIKONN is a local company and I love supporting small buisness that are close by =). There are 2 collection GOLD and SILVER. The one I tried was the MARILYN 3D (below picture)from the Gold Collection and they are amazing! The full and whispey effect is definitely a plus for me!. What is great about IIKONN is that the lashes can be worn up to 25+times which in the long run is much more affordable then regular lashes. I’m looking forward to purchasing more for my clients this wedding season!Marilyn

Black Eye Liner. Love it or Hate it?

We have all had that one time when we applied “black eye liner” and within 2 hours it was all under neath our eyes, we look in the mirror and we looked like a mixture between a racoon and someone who hadn’t slept for days or both haha.  I have tried many eye liners on the market and some of them have claimes they are are ” water proof, non smudging, non moving etc”. Some of them lived up to their claim, some unfortunately are in the bottom of my makeup drawers collecting dust.  Here are my top 3 liners in all formulas

1) Eye Pencil-There are the pencil formulas and there are the ” kohl” formulas.  I personally think the kohl formulas are better for ” smudging” as they are softer so they are perfect for creating that based for a smokey eye. I love Makeup Forever Aqua Eyes Black Eye liner as its not too soft and not too stick, you can apply this on top, bottom or even in the waterline. Make sure you sharpen it to get a more crisp line

Makeupfor

2)Gel Pot- Gel Pot liners can be applied with a angled brush for that “cat eyed” look, dip your brush into the pot, take off the excess and apply it close to your lash line and flick outwards.  With the angles of your brush you can manipulate the product to get the liner as thin or as thick as you want.  Black track has a quick drying time so you may have to move fast, remember practise makes perfect 😉

mac

3)Liquid Eye Liners- I used to hate them as the liner would end up all over my lids and when I would open my eyes it was a HUGE mess, it used to take me 15 mins to just to apply one eye.  I used learnt to love liquid as you dont need a brush or a sharpener. Tip: Just remember to tilt your head  all the way up and look down. This eye liner drys fast so it shouldn’t smudge all over your eye lids =)

Hope this all helped everyones Eye Liner Woes!

Falsies for the WIN !

We all love longer, fuller more voluminous lashes right? There are so many products out there that claim to  give you “fuller lashes with just a swipe” and “360 degrees curl and drama”.  So many mascaras but where do you start? I believe the easiest step is just to apply a pair  or 2! of false lashes to give your lashes that extra ” oomph!”. Here are a few options

1) Strip lashes- One of the most popular ones are the strip lashes, they come with a lash band which you apply glue on, wait 30 secs and  plop them close to their lash line.  Applying them may be a bit tricky but it just takes practise. I like using real hair strip lashes instead of the synthetic ones as they feel more comfortably and look more natural. There are many brands which include Ardell, Red Cherry, Davinci and even MINK lashes which are my favourite ( so soft and gorgeous) Its all up to preference. TIP: You can always cut the band in half and apply them separately if you are having a hard time

strip

2) Individual Clusters- Another popular temporary option is individual clusters. Whats great about individual is that they are more versatile. They can be placed only on the outer corners for a more “winged eye” look which out having a full strip on.  You can also strategically place them on your lash line with Small, Medium, Large clusters to have a more custom look.  I recommend cluster lashes for those are want a little enhancement, these are also perfect for those who are just  starting to wear  lashes.  TIP: Apply 4-6 clusters at the outer corners of your eye and watch the magic happen

dura

3)Lash Extensions- I’m sure you have a girlfriend who has gotten these done. Depending on the style they can look super natural or very full.  Lash Extensions are everywhere at the moment with different styles/ curls/ 3d, 4d/ classic set etc.  The lash extensions lasts 4-6 weeks depending on how well you take care of them.  Once applied no need for mascara in the morning.  TIP: Once you have them, they become quite addictive so beware ;).  If getting extensions done, do your research sometimes its worth it paying the extra dollar.

Airbrush Finish with out the Airbrush<3

I have clients all the time requesting a “airbrush look” especially for brides.  Airbrush makeup makes your face look flawless, impeccable and absolutely perfect ( if done right).  Airbrush services are a additional fee however those who are on a budget, we offer a second option which I prefer so much more ( no extra machine, no holding your breath, no horror stories if the machine breaks mid way).  We love using the Beauty Blender for air brush makeup.  There are no edges so you will not get any streaks or brush marks on the face.  I love the versatility of the beauty blender because you can apply and also erase (yay! for double duty). The instructions say you should dampen the sponge and apply the makeup on your face. I love it because you get so much more control of the product you are providing.  Also not only can you apply wet foundation, you can apply powders as well!. The Beauty Blender is one of my must have products in my kit <3 What do you use to create the airbrushed makeup look without the airbrush?
